Default '89 560 SEL Speedometer Mystery

Any clues would be MUCH appreciated...we're pulling our hair out:

Speedometer works intermittently; usually works when gas pedal is depressed, but usually goes to zero when you let your foot off the gas. Sometimes just goes on and off as you're cruising down the freeway.

Mystery clue: Speedometer ALWAYS works normally when the heater is blowing warm air, and goes back to being intermittant when the heater blows cooler air. This leads me to believe that there may be a component under the dash which feeds some kind of signal to the speedometer, and this component may have some kind of thermal fault which produces the problem.

The ABS controller and the speedometer head unit have been replaced, with no change.

Anyone seen this before? E-mail to kemp.hiatt@speakeasy.net.
