I also drained the tank, usually when replacing the fuel pump and filter is to disconnect the main hose from the tank that connect to the fuel filter. Ensure as you are loosening the connectin that you have container, preferable a wide mouth container ready as it will flow swiftly once that hose is disconnected. That will remove most of the gasoline in that tank. And then disconnect the hoses and fuel pumps and dump any fuel inside the pumps. I would recommend fuel filter replacement anyways if the gas been sitting for a while. This can be done from rear of the car underneath near the passenger side tire if I recall right.
