Default 2000 S500 New to me

Just got this car w/ $50K miles on it. Need some help with the foloowing, please:

- Filter symbol on controls- when activated does it constantly filter or does it automatically test the air quality and kick in only when unacceptable levels are found?

- Are there any updates to NAV System that I should be aware of? Are original CD's ok to use or are newer ones available?

- In manual heat/ac mose when you can direct airflow with pop-out ****...what does the symbol of double box (at 9 o'clock position) represent?

Thanks all!

PS- How does the car perform when upgarding to Sport Rims?

Just got my 2000 S430 last week. From what I can gather CDs are no longer available since they went to DVDs 3 yrs ago, mine came with only one CD! I doubt I'll try to find the other 8.
Re: your other questions, I am still figuring things out. I hope we get some answers. This is a very quiet forum, nothing like the 300C forum I am part of. I know there is a time limit on the recirculation mode, no clue on the filter but I suspect it is active based on a sensor?

I thought I was the only one that noticed how quiet things get when something breaks.

I am new here BW, this is indeed a very large and very quiet forum. I don't know how good the search function is but it seems perhaps a good way to go if a topic is old and already addressed. Without a doubt, you can hear a pin drop on these boards.

I just got an S430 last month too. Regarding the CD's, you can pick up other territories on ebay. I actually have 3 for the Alabama area and will never use them...if that's the one you're looking for let me know. I think the latest CD you'll find is a 2002 version. Unless a major road has been built, you should be fine using the older versions. You can buy the whole set on ebay for under $110. I bought the MidAtlantic version for $25.

Thanks banker, I will look to ebay for a full set, if your Bama disc was for the Ohio Valley I would be all over it. I might just buy a couple of regional discs given I don't plan to venture more than 500 miles from home (too easy to fly Southwest Air).

Re your Q about different performance with sport rims:
I assume you intend to plus 1 or plus 2 your tire and rim size and therefore have a wider rim? If so, you gain more adhesion with a wider footprint, but if the rolling size (viz. circumference) is increased, you'll have slower acceleration but potentially a bit more top end. Most plus 1 and 2 changes - because the aspect ratio of the new tire is less, such as a 40 series tire replacing a OEM 55 series tire (for example) - retain approximately the original circumference, so not only will the acceleration and top end be about the same as before but the speedometer reading will be approximately the same. Of course if you bling up to 19s and 20s and beyond, the game is changed.
A wider tire is less desireable for deep snow, if you're heading to northern Ontario for your annual moose hunt. Tieing a dead moose on the fender of your Merc will be a problem, too.
For a fairly good primer on tires and their effect on performance, I think tirerack.com has info you should see.
