2000 S500 Check Engine Light

RE: 2000 S500 Check Engine Light
No I'm not an Mb tech but I am very familiar with general auto installations having spent 45 years in the industry.
There will be a set time for changing a MAF under warranty but I have no idea what time is stated. I guess I could do the job in 15mins but I suspect your time of 1 hour should more than cover.
If you are a DIYer the job is extremely simple, no special tools other than a reset of the On Board Diagnostic codes. Local auto shops in the USA will do this for you (if you speak to them nicely! since it is literally a 2 minute job)
MB MAFs are quite expensive but I CONSIDER MONEY WELL SPENT. OTHERS MAY DISAGREE WITH ME BUT THE CHOICE IS YOURS. (Sorry about Caps.) Non MB MAF's can give surprising problems of poor pickup, excess consumption not to mention spurious codes.
STUART.

RE: 2000 S500 Check Engine Light
Thank you again Stuart. I will most likely bite the bullet and get the dealer to put in the MB part. Based on your input, I'll press them to do the whole job (confirm codes/replace part/reset codes) for a 1/2 hour of labor time (i.e., $50 USD) + the price of the part.

RE: 2000 S500 Check Engine Light
JFI the rate over here in the UK is >200 USD/hr!!
Gas at 8+ USD / US Gall = (10+ USD / Imp Gall)
8yr/80k emissions warranty!
And you guys think things are expensive over there!
Next item on the agenda is paying to have out wastebins emptied after already paying local tax to cover this.
50USD sounds a snip.

RE: 2000 S500 Check Engine Light
I just spoke with the local MB dealer - the guy said they charge 2.5 hours of labor time to replace a MAF sensor. Am I missing something here? I don't think he liked the fact that I'd already read the codes. I guess business must be slow for them.

11 USD for diesel? That's just crazy!
I have a call into a small local shop that specializes in imports to see if they will do the job for less. If not, I'm going to do it myself. Any special instructions you can recommend? Will the CEL ultimately turn off by itself once the MAF sensor is replaced? Thanks again for your help, Stuart.

The local shop (which has a very good reputation and has worked on my SL 600 before) is going to do the job next Tuesday. They said it willtake only 1 hour of labor @ $85 USD. Plus, they must get the parts from MB for a little cheaperthan regular consumers ($385 versus $450 for the Bosch MAF sensor).Ihope this solves the problem.

...and your truckers are getting restless!
So long as your shop has an OBDII compliant scanner they will reset the codes (clear them) as part of the job. This process sounds so complicated but is a few moments job and most all garages have this sort of equipment in order to be in business these days.
The light will go off by itself after so many cycles but clearing and ensuring it doesn't reappear is the preferred option.
If you look up ohlords posts he has a link to a web page elesewhere that gives step by step instructions.
Familiar with Porsche? No but what is so differentabout a Porsche engine except they don't give you anywhere to put the water in!
What's the problem?
