1989 300SEL Head Unit replacement

Just picked up a 300SEL. Former owner said there's a short in the Becker head unit. Sure enough, if I click it on, it blows the fuse.

I'm not too worried about fixing it, as I have an Alpine Head unit that came from my former 300SD.

Problem is, this Becker Grand Prix has a line out connector, and apparently the the 300SEL has an amplified system. There's a 3 pin connector on the back which I assume is the R,L, and Ground.

Anyone familiar with this system. There's additional speakers in the driver doors, stock.

I'm tempted to hook up the line out from the Alpine head unit, but was curious if there's some sort of relay that needs to be tripped to power the external amps, etc.

Also, if anyone know of a schematic for the optional system.. or if its standard..

Thanks!

Tim

Most stereo shops usually can "bypass" the amps if need be. Many, dont like to do it, as it is "extra" work, but with some prodding they'll do it.

If you are installing an after market system in the car, you can buy the three pin adaptor if you plan on working with the amps and after market radio. Usually found at major radio shops and or ones that deal or dealt with imports. Many shops will give you a deer in the headlight stare when you as about this or doing anything to a Mercedes for that matter.

if you really want to shine them on, ask about doing an aftermarket job in a BMW E23 and watch them shudder (for the ones that done it before.)
