1987 300D Ball Joint Replacement Question
I have always wanted a mercedes diesel. I found a 87 300D Turbo for $700 (forgive me if this is in the wrong thread), it decent shape. 270K on it, but my grandfather had an older 300D that now as 390K on it and is still driving around Grand Haven, MI. The problem is, the ball joint appears to have poped out so the tire went up into the fender. This happened when the guy was driving to work.
Can the ball joint simply be replaced as long as nothing else is wrong (bent control arms, broken steering nuckle, etc....?
I have a spring compressor, so I should be able to do it. My main question is, how is the ball joint connected to the arm? Does it screw in and out, or is it a one piece deal. I found a balljoint for $44, and the control arms are $250+, so this would probably determin if I purchase the car or not.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks in Advance!

RE: 1987 300D Ball Joint Replacement Question
I had an 87 300E that needed new ball joints about ten years ago. I don't know how it was connected. The shop did both sides for about $400. You may consider doing BOTH sides BEFORE the other wheel breaks loose while you are cruising down a two lane road approaching an on comming 18 wheeler.
