1983 380SL V8 roadster Starting Problem
 

I have a 1983 380SL WITH A STARTING PROBLEM. When I bought the car the owner said this car had a past history of starting
and has started every time until just this week.
We replaced the coil,checked the where we tested to see if the rotor was getting spark to both ends, it seemed like it wasn't and bought a new rotor. After trying again to start the engine it acted like it wanted to start and finally did. I ran the car all day , it started every time ,then after letting it sit for several days its back to not starting again. Is there a fuel relay or some kind of sencer that I'm missing or can check. the engine just kicks over and it seems like a lack of fuel??? Any advice would be appreciated.

As I'm sure you are aware, there can be several things that can cause your problem.

"State of Tune" Etc..

There is an issue with the older model rotors that would cause a "hard start" condition.

If memory serves me correctly, a modified distributor rotor was phased into production in the early 80s. The new rotor is identified by a protruding ring (see the picture). The previous-version rotor may cause difficult engine starting. Therefore, the improved version rotor should be installed during regular maintenance. There really shouldn’t be any more of the old ones still floating around, but you never know.

Fuel Filter ?? -- has it been replaced?

The early Fuel Pump Relays (located behind the glove compartment) also had issues with bad contacts etc... so that's not a bad place to start as well.

Also, I remember that the check valve in the fuel system would go bad and cause starting problems as well.

Hello, one thing you probably want to check is the Idle Control Valve. On my 1983 380 SEC, it would die on me when reducing speed. After cleaning the ICV in alcohol, the situation disappeared. It is a fairly easy fix that is probably worth a try. Jim

sorry I didn't get back to you. The car acts like it wants to start where it almost fires.Its got a new coil,rotor and i have cleaned off all of the connectors under the dash and on engine.After it run and is warm it will fire right off but cold is a different story. The battery looks new and I topped of with new acid and the engine spins over very fast. I should buy a service manual because I don't know all the parts by looking at the engine as far as what elec connection goes to what.It just seems like it is one particular sensor or part????????
