Open Door Warning Poor Design

Open Door Warning Poor Design
Every car I've ever owned starting with a 1981 Subaru told me if a door was open...until my 2012 ML350. If we get in and the doom light is on, we have to play the game of EVERYONE check their door. If I don't notice the doom light on (daytime), we get 1/2 mile down the road, THEN the dash tells me which door is open. I backed into my garage and stupidly drove out with the tailgate open. It hit the garage door and broke the rear window! If their was a warning that the tailgate was open like my 1981 Subaru and every other car I've owned had, it would have prevented me from driving out of the garage before closing the tailgate!
What is the logic to waiting for one to drive half a mile before the door open warning comes on? Is there a way to override this to a setting where the open door warning is immediate?
Don't get me going on how the radio has to be on for the rear camera to work!
