ML320 will not shift out of low gear occasionally

I have an ML320 that won't shift out of 1st /maybe 2nd gear sometimes. I have to pull off and restart the car - almost like rebooting. I saw some other problems like mine, but didn't see any solutions. Any thoughts? Any work arounds besides "rebooting"?
