Hey Guys!
I just picked up a 2004 ML350 and I am investigating the same thing. There may be some differences from year to year but this is what I found out. Alpine has just come out with a control unit that integrates with some of the ML command module radios. The Alpine unit adds a number of auxillary outs and as I understand it, turns the MB radio into an alpine when activated. When deactivated the MB assumes its regular functions for the tape or in dash cd and radio... Cost for the Alpine piece is approximately $350 but there may be a number of cables and additional stuff needed to connect the ipod.
MB Year to year differences may be attributed to the vehicle going to fiber optic cables for its audio/video and accessories. I don't know when MB went to fiber optics for the ML.
I picked the brainiacs at my local TWEETER and other audio/video stores for this info.
I hope it helps!

It is really easy to do this. Just go to Circuit City and they will hard wire the Ipod to the radio. It have a little dock and it plays through the system. It is about 100.00 for the part and 40-50.00 to install. I had it done, and it works great.
Cicuity City sent mne to Sound Advice. Sound Advice said there was no way to do it. This is of course not true, but it's not easy. A wired FM transmitter seems like the best and most reasonably priced option. Sound Quality is supposed to be close to CD.
The best solutions is Dension iceLink Plus.
It works just like the way CD changer works. Your stock CD changer must be disconnected in order to use iceLink.
It also charges iPod battery and CD-quality music unlike AUX port and FM transmitters.
There seems to be quite a few members interested. We could definitely arrange group buy.
