Good morning all...

I have begun to hear a noise coming from the front of my engine, in what I would describe as the "belt area"...it is difficult to describe the noise, but I would say it was almost like a squeal or maybe a screeching sound.And I only hear this noise when I am at an idle or very low speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. This is on a 2000 ML430

could really be anything, but most likely the belt tensioner or the ac compressor pulleyor could just be the belt itself. all are common. try to pinpoint the noise to a general area or get a long screwdriver and put it on certain areas of pulleys and put it to your ear and you will hear the noise go up threw the screwdriver becarful not to put the screwdriver on any moving parts. you can also use a long piece of vacuum hose tubing and listen for the noise in the same manner. or try spraying the belt with belt dressing and see if the noise stops
