CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND OTHER IDIOT LIGHTS

2002 ML320 91,000 miles
The “Check Engine” light came on. My local independent shop advised me to replace the mass air/fuel meter. After replacement the “Check Engine Light” came back on and the “ETS” light also illuminated. Throttle response was severely limited almost causing an accident. Now the “Brake” light, “ETS”, and “Check engine” light illuminate when the engine is started. All lights extinguish, except the “Check Engine” light when the engine is shut-down and restarted. The “Check Engine” light has re-set itself, whoever only to come on again after a few days. Two local shops have stated the only salvation is to go to the local MBZ Dealer to have an exorcism conducted on this ML. Current tech data is only available at the MBZ Dealer or those who are willing to extortion for access to the data.
Any clue what is going on with the electronics?
Should I be prepared to trade this beast or is the ailment fairly minor and easily solved without taking out a 2nd mortgage?

RE: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND OTHER IDIOT LIGHTS

I know high-tech German automobile shop in Glendora, that works for $70/hr,
That's about 1/2 what dealers charge and you can watch what they are doing.
Buying, or leasing code reader would be another option if you want to deal with it.
