Default Check Engine Lamp On

Hi guys,

I have a 1998 ML320 with 69K miles on. The "Check Enging" Lamp used to go on and off for some time, now it's steadily on all the time. I took the car to the dealership and they checked it. Here's the result. Could you please help me decipher it?

Mass Air Flow Sensor is Faulty and Engine Adaptations are out of limits.
Check for codes found codes P0170 and P0173 in ME-SFI. Perform Electric Test A Mass Air Flow Sensor K/O Voltage and Found 1.4 Volts not nominal. Mass Air Flow Sensor is Faulty.

The delarship asked me an outrageus amount of money to replace whatever it is that needs to be replaced.

What do you wise guys suggest?

Thanks in advance to all of you.

Francesco

the mass airflow sensor itself is very exspensive. i would buy one and install it myself. when you pop the hood its to the left inline with the airfilter outlet and intake to back of engine. it has a electrical plug on it. held on by 2 clips and a hose clamp. after the new one is installed the adaptations will return back to normal range after driving awhile. if the check engine light doesnt go off after a whilse take it to auto zone they will clear the code for free

Thank you rmf0102!!!

where can I buy it and how much do you think it costs? Reading your post it looks like an easy DIY job. Can you be as kind as posting some pictures of where the sensor is located? Do you need any special tool to dismount/mount it?

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it!

Francesco

P.S.: I found a picture of the part on the Web. Can you confirm this is the thing?

no special tools needed just a flathead screwdriver 1 clip on top u can undo with your hand and one clip on the bottom. i dont have a pic but its pretty hard to miss on this vehicle. if u follow the tube from the air filter housing u cant miss it, if u do u probbably shouldnt be looking under your hood lol j/k. u can find one online but its kinda risky because there is no way to tell if its any good just by looking at it. id get it at the dealership. its probbablty around 300 bucks from the dealership.

You're great rmf0102!

I'll do the job myself. Btw, I drove the car in this conditions for a long while. Do you think I could have caused any damage?

Thanks,

Francesco

that pic is it!! no damage should be caused, just poor gas mileage. while your in the area make sure your air filter is ok. dirty air filter can let dirt get to the maf.

You bet!

Thanks again for the useful hints!

Francesco

P.S.: as soon as I carry out the job I'll post the results. I really hope that light is going off once and for all!

I have a '00 ML320 that had the exact same problem and got the info. for the fix from this site, after having the codes read for free at a local Auto Zone. I purchased my MAF on eBay, brand new, for $150.00 + $6.00 S/H. After installation of the MAF and a new air filter, the CEL went out within 100 miles of driving and hasn't been back on since (I can't explain the joy I felt seeing that light go off after having that orange glare for over two months). My fuel mileage has also improved about 3 mpg. This site is the greatest!

Just called the dealership and they asked me 446 dollars + tax for the MAS sensor!!!!!

Does this price sound reasonable?

I found a new one on eBay for 169 dollars: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-M...QQcmdZViewItem

What would you do?

Thanks,

Francesco

This is the individual that I purchased mine from on eBay (current listing) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...spagenameZWDVW and was very happy with the purchase. You don't need the entire housing, just the sensor replacement. Like I said, it shut the light off immediately upon replacement, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the part from him again if it is necessary in another 60K. LOL!
