I have owned this car since day 1. Regular oil changes 5m mi w/synthetic Mobil 1 at about 80,000 mi(currently 84m) it began to use 1qt every 300 to 400 mi. Aware of class action suit. M-B say do the test but since I have a 2002 it doesn't qualify for their settlment. What's the deal with these cars? Are all 320 engines oil eaters?

Definitely not all of them, only some and your's is one of them! I was reading about it alot. I have over 158K miles on my engine, oil stays nice and clean for 10,000 miles and to my surprise, oil level stays exactly same.
It seems to me that meny of those affected engines were replaced for free even-do Mercedes raised the standard minimum consumption level for 3.2L ( I believe).
Go to your local library, log onto Alldata (for free only from liberary computer) through online databases in automotive repair section and you will find out how they test them and decide eligibility for free repair or complete engine replacement. They can try to blame it on gasoline quality (acidity). The info there is official Mercedes to their service departments and mechanics.
