Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.

We've been providing results for both the 2007 and the 2008, but with asterisks for marginal sample size. A few additional participants would really help.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.

It's been three months, so the results for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class have been updated again.

Repair rates, in terms of successful repair trips per 100 vehicles per year:

2007: 125, worse than average

2008: 99, worse than average

Sample sizes were small for both years, so these results can only serve as rough indicators of the actual repair rates. With additional participants, we could provide more precise results in future updates.

We have updated results for the GL-Class. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008: 150, worse than average

2007: 134, worse than average

In both cases the sample size is marginal, so on the site these results are asterisked and visible only to members. Their similarity does suggest that these results are accurate. Oddly, we have far more people signed up for the 2007, but more owners responded for the 2008. I'm baffled by the low response rate for the 2007.

We don't have enough participants to report separately by powertrain. If we did, it is likely that the diesel would have a higher repair rate, thanks to an intercooler hose that tends to detach. This is one reason for the higher reported repair frequency for the 2008.

Another common problem, for all GLs: the exterior door handles tend to break.
