Wobbling Steering Wheel - 1988 300E
At 60 mph the steering wheel shakes hard and at 65 it smoothes out. I just had all wheels balanced and before trying an alignment, thought I would post this with the hopes someone might have a view on the problem.

checked ball joints and control arm bushings?

Thanks, but I understand that if these parts are "at fault" the car wouldn't go back to "normal" after it gets to 65. Thanks again for your ggod suggestion.. I'm still trying to find the fix.

the tires might be in balance but the rims could be bent. axle could be bent, or possibly a bad tire, belt shift in tire. you could try a steering shock that might help alittle bit. or like the previous poster it colud be suspension issues.

II agre with Chassis22 at least based on my case: the wheel are bent (slightly) and the wobles could be felt at a certain road speed... it is a case bult up harmonic....

RE: Wobbling Steering Wheel - 1988 300E
I had the same problem and it was bent wheels (one or more wheels). I road test the car with a borrowed set of wheels and the vibration was gone then I bought a used set.
Before you started to do anything, I would suggest that you get a mechanic checking wheels bearing, steering dampener, ball joints (all the front end) and finally borrow a set of wheels form similar size and road test the car... |
