Unhappy Transmission won't come out of drive

So I have a 1982 300TD that it appears will not come out of drive. I can put the shifter into park and reverse but it feels a bit lax. Previously it was fine and just when I parked it, I noticed it rolled unless I put the parking brake on. I am unable to start it with the key since it will not go into park but I was able to hot wire it by jumping the terminals under the hood (after turning the key and warming up the glowplugs) and it drove fine.
Obviously I assume this is a linkage problem. The shifter does not feel really loose but just lax if you know what I mean. Is this something I can likely diagnosed by looking from above? (I hope). How would I access the linkage and or bushings I assume are the issue? Thanks!
