Transmission
I have a 1997 E320 with 105,000 miles. When I took it in today for service, I was told I needed to have the pan removed from the transmission and the fluid replaced. Do I need to have this done?I have no problems with my transmission.

I think that car may have a sealed for life transmission, but not sure. You should call your local mercedes dealership and ask a service tech. Don't get it repaired there, just ask them for advice and if it is sealed for life transmission.
They should gladly tell you.
Either way a trans service is a good idea, if it sealed for life they will need to siphon out the fuid from the fill spout. Synthetic trans fulid has a higher burn temp and will extend your trans life too.

The 722.6 tranny has a dipstick though you must buy is separately. This tranny can be drained via the pan drop, gasket and tranny fileter replaced, and about 8 Qts of synthetic fluid will come out. Have your independent shop do the deal. If they have MB spec fluid, go with that. If they balk, get a premium grade, brand name full synthetic fluid. (Some will crucify me for not using anything but MB fluid... I can live with it.) My non-MB fluid has helped me to get to 205k on my original transmission.
Have the service done about every 50K miles.... it is worth it. The fluid, labor and filter should cost around $250 or so... give or take.
If the dealer offers some sort of tranny filter special... go for it. Happy motoring.
