power, but WONT START ? Any help?
Hi,
I have a 97 420E with 105K. This past weekend the car just will not start. The lights on the dash will come on but the car will not even start to turn over. No clicks, no nothing. Any ideas? Could it be the CPS? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. sid |

Simple things first: Do headlights, dome light, etc. work, or are they dim? Dash lights will work even with near-dead battery. May need to have battery tested if you suspect it's bad. How far will key turn in ignition? Try turning steering wheel to enable ignition also.

RE: power, but WONT START ? Any help?
Hi. I forgot to mention that I did replace the battery. The steering column is not locked and the key turns all the way to the right. Originally I thought that maybe it was a problem with the factory alarm but when I called the dealership they told me that the security system wasnt the problem.

Hi Sleepwalker. Thanks for the reply. The vin is:

RE: power, but WONT START ? Any help?
And you're correct...the start will not actuate. I tried starting in neutral, nothing. I tried disconnecting the security and then reconnecting it...nothing.

As Sleepwalker states .. not CPS
And not DAS, because the Drive Authorization System inhibits the Engine Management System. So the starter would still spin, but the engine wouldn't start. Re-check the battery connections. ( make sure they are clean and tight ) Verify that the battery is indeed "good" and fully charged ( with a battery tester preferably ) Check the starter relay & fuses. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the advice. The battery tests good, I recleaned the connections, all fuses and relays appear to be intact. But, still no starter action.

RE: power, but WONT START ? Any help?
this will be tough. but if you are a fair handyman, we can work it out together.
let's start by studying the wiring diagram. as you can see, the violet wire is the terminal 50 (starting). first it goes to the cycle module (N65). step 1. can you get the 12volts power everytime you turn the ignition switch to start position? you check from connector B, pin number 2. step 2. can you get that 12volts power on violet/white or violet wire on connector X22? (you may skip this step first) step 3. can you get that 12v on the back of starter at start position? step 4. can you get a good 12volts on that X4/31? (inside or outside...whichever is convenient for you, but you may skip this test first) step 5. can you get a good 12volts on that X4? (inside or outside...whichever is convenient for you) give us a lead and then we can analyze where the problem lies. your car is E240.
210.072 produced november 7, 1996. |
RE: power, but WONT START ? Any help?
Here's a little more info....
Hope this helps. The start control interrupts the circuit (circuit 50) to the solenoid switch of the starter after the engine start speed is reached. The solenoid switch of the starter is operated not through the ignition/start switch but, in position P or N, through the starter relay by the engine control module. The voltage for the starter relay (coil) is supplied through circuit 87. The starter relay is operated by the engine control module through ground. An automatic start control is performed by the engine control module when the ignition/start switch is pressed into the start position. Once the engine start speed of 400 to 700 rpm is reached, the engine control module interrupts the ground actuation to the starter relay and thus the start operation. Once the start operation has commenced, switching off circuit 50 has no effect at the ignition/start switch. The starter rotates until the specified start speed is reached or at 80 °C engine temperature for about 5 seconds , when the engine is cold for up to 10 seconds. The pic includes another picture for the puzzle :) |

Sleepwalker ... your attachments always look so much better than mine :) Nice and Colorful ! Mine are always dull black and white and kind of crusty. LOL Oh well ... as long as they can help someone I guess that all that counts. :) |
