HI just got a 300te 1993 with 118K miles. A few maintence items are occuring to me.
1) I do not know what type of oil has been used, can I switch to synthetic (Mobile 1) at this time not knowing itf it was usped previously.
2) Same with autotrans fluid
3) What are the best spark plugs to use
4) Any other things to check or change? (Belts seem ok at this time.
5) P.S. car just had transmission redone and has 2 year warrantee- how common is it to need such work?

Check out drivewire.com for the plugs, just type in your car info and they'll show you the plugs. They had the best prices when I was shopping around.

 

Synthetic oil is superior regardless of what was used before. Frankly, most MB (and other products) that are well known for going 300K+ were not using synthetic oil. I would use regular oil (I like Valvoline or Napa which is valvoline). No to synthetic trans fluid, MB calls for trans service every 30K, just use the recommended spec. fluid. It is very unusual for an MB trans to go out so early, probably some idiot who did not service it properly. BTW, have you had the differential fluid changed, if not do so now, this is one of the most overlooked service items that is cheap and easy. My brother saw a smoking Astro van on the freeway with the diff glowing cherry red. Plug specs should be in the owner's manual or any auto parts store application guide.
