Loud thump in rear. then hesitation when given gas. HELP
 

I have a 1991 190E 2.3 that was running good, Then all of the sudden I was slowing down at a red light and I heard a thump or something loud enough that I thought the guy behind me bumped me. Then light turns green and the car starts to hesitate almost die but stays running long enough to make it home. The rest of the way home when I would give it gas it would hesitate but keep running. I am afraid to go anywhere now in fear of it breaking down. Any help would be much appreciated. I would take it to a shop but the last guy who I went to..Well let's just say not all mechanics are honest..Thanks again to anybody who helps!
Also I did get gas at a not so good "tower mart" which I am getting down to the bottom of the tank if that makes any difference. Thanks

Try a different shop. Don't let one mess it up for everyone. There are less than honest people in every single profession in this world.

It just sounded like from the passenger rear end. I agree about the shop thing but I really don't have the kind of cash at the moment considering I just bought this car and a new home.I promise I'm not a cheap ass or anything I would just like to figure it out before having to pay someone to do it. Thanks for the quick response.

If the car still running as usual and nothing seemed weird to you.. my guess is that the gas tank is under vacuum (suction from the fuel pump), the gas tank wall cave in a bit....... then at one point (and god now when) air enter the gas tank which creates the loud pop you heard because the gas tank wall came back to it's original shape....If this the case, I would suggest that you change the gas cap.

Thanks for the quick reply's! I will change the gas cap tomorrow that seems to make sense.My brother also said it could be the gas as Battlecat714 had mentioned.Thanks I will post how it goes after today. More feedback is always appreciated and thanks to those who have already posted.
