Shouldn't think so.
Usual gearing will be nearer 30mph/1000revs.
Looks like you are not getting into top gear.
Automatic?

OK
Its Automatic and the car is not going into top gear.
This is a job for an experienced MB or transmission repair shop.
I don't believe there is an easy solution.
Even measuring the gearbox transmission level which is possibly step 1 is not a simple task on some MB's.
The next step might be to confirm how many gears your car has and to watch each gear as it selected (speedometer vs tachometer) and confirm it doesn't reach top gear. Not sure whether your trans is 3, 4, or 5 speed.

Don't worry, don't loose sleep over this and please, don't spend a nickle on this non-problem.
All the answers you got so far are wrong,

Your RPM at 60 or 75mph with your 2.6 is totally and absolutely normal.
Take it from a 2.6 owner/ driver since 1991 who has traveled nearly 400K with it.

ps: info to snanceki: It is a 4 speed transmission

Hi,

I give precedence to your hands on experience on this model vs my general automotive experience.

However.....

I find a gearing as low as 20mph per 1000revs extremely low for a car of this type. Presumably so did the original poster!!

Assuming that the engine is designed to pull lets say 5,500 revs in top this will give a top speed of only 110 mph.
I would have expected a car of this type to achieve about 125mph which would result in the engine pulling over 6250rpm.

20/1000 feels wrong. If correct I wonder what the fuel consumption is?

Maybe the real gearing is closer to 23 - 25 and speedo / tachometer errors are compounding the issue. Does this age of car have a mechanical or electronic speedo?

I accept that there is always something new to learn. I apologise should my answer be incorrect.

What is the source of your gearing information please so that we can LEARN from this experience.

snanceki:
The 2.6 engine (officially a 103 serie engine) will easily and smoothly pull at 6,000RPM
It has a mechanical speedo which tends to be on the optimistic (fast) side.
I don't have it handy, but I remember having seen a road test result where a 2.6was cloked at 131mph.
30 mpg (highway) at 65-70mph is not uncommon.

Hi

Thx for all of those info and sorry for that very late posting (had a computer problem) anyways, how about a 2.3 190E what rpm will it be at 60 or 75 mph? Will it be very high? and also will car consume more gas in the highway than in the city?

Thx

Sounds normal to me. My 1989 300E runs around 3000 rpm at 60mph.
