Head Rests
I have an 87' 260e with 250,000 miles on it and just the other day the headrests quit working. Now they are stuck in the up position and the button on the dash seems to have no effect. All the fuses are fine. I even checked the air tubes leading out of the headrest devices, and there seems to be no leaks.

I did have a small fire in the engine compartment a while ago, and a little tube with air comming from it got melted. I patched it up with some tape, and nothing seemed to be malfunctioning. The thing is, my headrests worked just fine after the fire and didn't go out for nearly 6 months after it happened.

Does my problem seem electrical or something else? All the other buttons on my dash work, so I don't think it is electrical. Any advice would be great. If I can't fix the problem, is there a way to manually recline the headrests?

There's a button on the back of your seat that is just barely visible because it's located under the leather/tex whichever you have. Look about 6" to the right of the seatback center line approx. 8" below the top of the seat. You will see a little bump, push on it and that will release the headrest mechanism allowing you to remove it or slide it down.
Sorry for the confusion, but I was talking about the rear headrests, not the front. The front ones aren't automatic, and the rear ones are. Have you ever encountered any issues with this before, because I can find no way to manually put down the back headrests without the use of the dash button, but it doesn't work.
The vaccum hose that controls the headrests ran from the engine and only worked when the engine was on. I figured out that the problem lay whith the electronically controled vaccum valve located under the rear left seat. Since I didn't have another unit to replace it, I just hooked up the hose running from the engine directly to the hose leading to the trunk where the headrest apparatuses are. Now the button doesn't control it, but they do stay down.

Thank you for your input.

I think i have a solution for u

go in your trunk and take off the back cover panels in front of you

and you should find a handle under each headrest

pull on it and it will put down your back head rest
