Gunk

I read some time ago about the "gunk" that accumulates in the oil filler cap on v-6 E320 engines from '96 to ? I have a '98 E320 which does the same thing; in cold weather, if you don't drive it a big bunch of miles, it accululates a mixture of oil and moisture (gunk)which shows up in the oil filler cap. It seems to be a common problem with these engines. My question is what do I do about "handling" this problem so that no damage happens to my engine down the road. Does anyone know the answer to this? I am worried!Help!!!

RE: Gunk

I recommend just driving it more often, and a little harder on the throttle, Benzs run better when you drive them all the time. The people who dont drive them enough are the people who have more complaints, generally.

Chassis221:
Thank you for your reply to my concern about "gunk." Actually, I do drive the MB every day, several times. I have noticed that this gunk disappears if I drive it at highway speeds for even a little distance; I guess the moisture gets vaporized. Anyway, thank you for replying; I appreciate it.

How many mileage you have on your car? and how do you often change your oil?

RE: Gunk

Joe55: The car has 89,000 miles, and I change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles.
Now that warmer weather is here in Texas, it doesn't seem to do the "gunk" thing. Puzzling!

RE: Gunk

I see..that is a low mileage for a '96 , I guess you have to drive it hard for sometime and it helps to remove those carbon deposits as well.

Take care & enjoy the ride,
