Default Gas tank cover is stuck

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2006 E500 with a gas tank cover that doesn't want to open when I unlock the car. Does anyone know whether there is an internal release mechanism and where it's located ?
Many thanks in advance !

On my 98 E320 wagon there is a manual release under the cargo area cover on that side (very near the gas cap cover. It's explained in the OM. It may be in yours as well if you have one.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for your reply. I had already opened the trunk and removed the covers to see if there was anything on the same side of the gas cap, but found nothing. What does the manual release look like ? Is it a handle ?

Sorry, can't recall exactly. I only checked it when I first got the car about 2 years ago. Never had to actually use it. I do recall that in addition to removing the carpeted cover there was fibreboard cutout that had to be pulled open. I think underneath was a lever(?).

If you don't have an owners manual (it should be in there), you can join mbusa.com (free) and download one. (Note to others - I think mbusa only has manuals online for MY2004 and newer).

Thanks again. I finally found what I was looking for. The gas tank cover is referred to as "fuel filler flap" on the OM. The same manual shows the location of the emergency release (for '06 E-class look at page 428).

Great. I had to go out to the garage just now and checked, The actual release is a square plastic **** that you pull toward the rear of the car.
