External temperature guage

Hi! I am getting to know my "new" '93 300D. The external temperature readout on the dash just is blank. No numbers, symbols, nothing. I was just wondering if this is likely to be the guage itself or the temp probe under the bumper? Thanks for any ideas...

The temperature probe is behind front license plate. Easy place to access and damage. I would start with checking the connectors. .
