E320 Starting Problem

Wife's 98 E320 will not start at times after being run (hot). It's random and only happen occassionally (which is not good for my health). No "check engine light", no other indications. Starter turns fine, appears to be lack of iginition. Car runs fine otherwise, no missing, no hesitation. Crackshaft position sensor was suggested as the problem. Any other suggestions.

but the starter still cranks?

it is best to see if there is some fault code stored on the engine control unit.

Starter cranks just fine.. I'll check and see if there is a fault code. However, there is no indication (check engine light) or other
codes showing on the dash indicator. Might be a hidden code and I will check tomorrow. If it were the fuel filter it seems like it would
run rough and hesitate for lack of fuel??

it is better to check if there was a fault code.

if you are going to the workshop, if possible simulate the problem with the fuel gauge installed. see if the pressure goes down (maybe normal is 3.2 bar).

just make sure about the problem first in order to avoid replacing un-necessary parts.

if only i am with your car, then i can confirm things for you, but this time you have to leave it on the hands who got expertise.

RE: E320 Starting Problem

you might even check to see if its a relay (fuel pump or other) that is occasionally clicking on and off...usually those are not indicated in a fault code. Same problem happened to my 94 e320...turns out the housing where the fuel pump relay was corroded and wireings were loose. Just a thought. Good luck.

RE: E320 Starting Problem

FYI, the problem was the "crankshaft position sensor". After several attempts to duplicate the problem it occured and the code
appeared on the OBDII. Thanks for the help..

RE: E320 Starting Problem

Hey guys..
I am just a beginner with merc- E320 1996.
I think I have a similar problem with starting. It starts the first time in morning.
But then intermittently, it just doesnt start. I can hear the Unlocking and Fuel pumping everytime, but the back lights dont come up and there appears lack of ignition. But then also at times, I just cant rotate the key fully. It seems as if the key just wont go further.. then i take it out and then after a few tries ( ranging from 3-15), it starts and then there is no problem.
if I stop again somewhere even for more than one hour, it does that again at times.
please help.
Also, I wanted to know wats this fault code and OBDII.

Thanks a lot :)
