My 01 reg E320 CDI auto intermittantly get stuck in emergency mode. Until recently restarting (rebooting!) after going a mile cleared the problem. Now for the last four days it is stuck in second or reverse only. My authorized Mercedes service center in December first topped up automatic transmission fluid (though it was within spec); next visit changed a valve in transmission (part no. A1402700606) but this had no effect on the intermittant problem. Now they want to replace the gear change electronics. Is this a known defect? Is it usual for the car's diagnostic system to give a false reading concerining the valve?

the whole electric control unit must be replaced. (hydraulic)

the shift solenoid valves sometimes get stuck or loose which gives fault and turn to emergency mode.

that part number is obsolete and not in use anymore.

yes, that's correct for your model.

please check the ETC control module also. it's okay as of CW 45. less than that, it also needs replacement. (also see if there's some oil or water on the connector). make sure you reconnect it tightly.

another cause is that the output speed sensor is defective. that's why it's better to read the fault memory first.

 

Thanks for your correction. What is CW 45? The transmission or the ETC? Are there any known issues with this emergency mode for this model/year?
