I have W124 E320 1995 Station wagon which has proved to be a very good car. Well one of my friend who works in a rent a car business is recommending me to buy the above subject car. (E 220 CDI 2004). The car has done 425,000 KM. I know the mileage is very high, but even then when i drove it was just like a brand new machine.

Any views will be appreciated as the car has done a lot of mileage. Or if someone still recommends to buy it then what are the things which should be seen in the car.

 

Depends on how much your friend wants for it! However, I drive a 2001 (W220) E 220CDi with 175,000 miles under it's belt (which equates to 280,000km approx. My car feels like new, drives smoothly and returns a brilliant 45-50mpg on a daily basis. The engine is like new and my ace mechanic says it's showing no signs of wear at all.

The gearbox (5 speed Tiptronic auto) is smooth, but does a few funny things from time to time. We live in a very hilly area of the UK and occasionally when accelerating up a steep hill it just pops into neutral and doesn't know where to go for a few seconds. Very occassionally I need to stop and restart the car which solves it every time. This is a problem I had with a previous Merc C Class auto, so I guess it's an electrical glitch rather than mechanical.

If it's the right price and well looked after, I'd go for it without reservation.
