Changing oil

I'm new to this game and the changing of an oil filter insert is a brand new concept. The top has an arrow on it (98 E320 wagon}. Which way is indicated loosening and tightening. Also, a precaution of what I need to do and what not to do would be most appreciated. Am changing both oil and filter every 6,000 miles. Good, bad? Any and all advice would be appreciated. Carolina

I suspect the arrow indicates the direction of tightening. That plastic cap gets re-torqued to 18 ft*lbs. The threading is conventional: Clockwise to tighten

We use compliant 229.xx oils in our '02 wagon and change when indicated by the FSS system. It's typically around 11k miles. I can't recall, does the 1998MY car have FSS??

Whatever you do, don't use crappy oil in these cars. You will pay for it down the road...regardless how frequently you change it.
