Brake Malfunctions

Hope this will help someone. Let me know if it does.

My 2000 E320 gave 3 malfunctions (ESP, BAS, ABS). I pumped the brakes lightly and restarted the engine. This worked for a while to prevent the messages. Could not use Cruise Control while messages were showing. However the fix was only temporary. I then set the parking brake, started the car and then pressed the foot brake. When I started the car, it appeared to be fixed. It is still working properly. I think that the procedure caused more brake fluid to go into the system between the master cylinder and the wheel cylinders, thus preventing the malfunctions error displays.

Makes sense to me!!!

I hate to disappoint you with your wrong discovery and diagnosis.

You have a faulty Stop Light Switch. Some people call it brake light switch.

Hay, you are very lucky. It is an inexpensive part.

I am glad to concede if the switch is the culprit. In fact, the error occurred once this morning, and I repeated the parking brake manuver and it has not recurred again today with driving the car four times.

I need step by step procedure for replacing the switch, including the part number.

Update: September 2007 - Problem has recurred after 4 months. Problem disappeared again after performing the brake pumping procedure. Works for me.

I am ready to concede that I was wrong. My problem recurred about November 15, 2007. I finally had to replace my brake light switch and that solved the problem.

Try the Stop Light Switch first. It´s an inexpensive spare. My 98 E320 had the same problem 2 years ago. The dealer wanted to replace all BAS, ABS unit for a lot of $$$. It cost me about 30 dollars and a mechanic friend here in Mexico to fix it.
