Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
I am trying to get some spare parts and supplies ordered and can't figure out if these two coolants (blue or yellow) are compatible with one another. Our 2002 wagon has the blue colored coolant and it's slightly low so the warning indicator comes on 1st thing in the morning when the car is cold.
If I go to the dealer, will they have both coolants? It's really difficult to determine the correct coolant level based upon the information provided in the OM. The plastic reservoir doesn't have a "FULL" mark and the OM just says it is supposed to be at the "parting line" which is where I believe the clear plastic and the black plastic meet. Is this right? It appears full at the front edge of the bottle but the coolant is about 1" down at the rear edge of the bottle. [&:] Thanks for any guidance. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
"parting line" which is where I believe the clear plastic and the black plastic meet there must be an air space for the coolant to expand... or else it will put too much pressure on the hose. ask for the blue coolant. the dye can help you locate future leaks. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
thanks, sleepwalker.
Is it likely the dealer will have both yellow and blue coolants? or has the blue coolant been phased out? |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
they got both. blue is a newer one.
|
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
Excellent, thanks again.
Is there a recommendation (time-based) to change it or do they claim it's another "lifetime fill"? |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
every 3 years on your model.
|
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
OK, I guess I'll pickup two gallons and get set to do it.
Thanks. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
no! :D
two galons are too much. one is enough. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
I'd like to have some left over. What is the total system capacity?
thx. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
WHAT ABOUT E420 '97 MODEL? HOW OFTEN DOES ONE FLUSH OUT THE COOLANT? YELLOW OR BLUE COLOR, DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
THANKS |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
9,0 liters for 104 engine. (uberwgn)
11.0 liters for 119 engine (GOMES). also every 3 years. yellow or blue... it doesn't matter. the blue color got a dye which turns into crystalline powder when in contact with open air and dried. this is only to aide on finding the leak. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
sleepwalker, you're the best. Thanks for your help!!

RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
Thanks. Carry on with the good job well done (~.~)

RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
OK, I probably should not ask this question but I will:
[flamesuit] Should I use tap water* or should I use distilled water to blend with my fresh blue coolant?[/flamesuit] Thanks. *we're on city water, it's good quality and is not severely loaded with minerals. |
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
Tap water is fine in the radiator. Use distilled water in your battery, if it's not maintenance-free.
|
RE: Blue vs. Yellow Coolant
OK, thanks, Lugnut.
Just got back from the dealer and he says there's no blue coolant, it's factory fill only. So, I just grabbed a couple of gallons of the yellow and headed out the door. [&:] |
