blower fan problems

Hi everyone,

The blower fan in my 1998 E320 wagon does not respond to the fan switch inputs. Seems when the car heats up if a fan setting is selected it may decide to eventually start running. This is a problem with the cold weather and need for heat on long drives.

I have tried auto temp, manual fan adjustment, changing the blower settings (feet, defrost, passenger vents)... if you hit 'defrost' the fan also does not respond.

I know the fan works as it will come on at odd times... does this sound like a thermostat issue???

Thanks in advance for your help!

John:)

RE: blower fan problems

I'm having a similar problem, although we may different. My blower is squealing and needs replacing. Rather that fusing it, MB used a relay/breaker that is found in the screw down box right adjacent the replaceable fuses. My blower is only working occasionally now because I think the relay is old and probably never has had to click on and off before. So I make a habit of turning the climate control off when I exit the car-that way I can warm things up a bit on start-up, so as not to tax the cold blower further. You'll still get some heat if everything else in the HVAC system is OK, just not fan driven. Of course this is crazy unsafe in cold weather when you need a defroster.

RE: blower fan problems

There is a part change for the fan relay that requires a fan and housing replacement as well. very expensive.

However there is a work around to replace the fan relay without replacing the housing and the fan.If your fan relay is in fact faulty, hereis a link to some good information and how to DYI: http://forums.mbworld.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=153918
