Default 98 E320 engine heat

i'm having a tense time with this car, where during hot weather, and in traffic jams, the a/c cannot be turned on cause then the engine temperature rises quick to a dangerous level, is this a usual aspect or is this a problem and suggestions please.....

Along w/ your thermostat (and perhaps the type of coolant and the level), I will also recomend that you check your auxilary fan(s)....they will usually come on when your a/c isrunning.

i doubt any of these problems, cause, not ot brag, but i'm a freak, never let things get bad, so i get my car maintained every week or so, checking everything from fluids to basic mechanics and all.......and as for the fans, wouldn't i have that problem all the time instead of just traffic jams......thank u

What do you mean, exactly, by "dangerous" levels? I find that Mercedes engines can run over 110 degrees C in the heat in Arizona, especially with A/C on, and do fine. If it gets to or over the red line at 120, then I'd worry about thermostat, etc.

well i dont think its a good thing to allow heat to reach the red line, cause then you'll engine'll crack up, but for example, if i have the a/c turned on, and got stuck in traffic for like 10 to 15 minutes, which happened a while ago, i'd look at the temp and find it midway between the red dash and the one preceeding it, and RISING at a slow rate....but getting there.....don't think that's normal...it's my first mercedes so i dont really get the catch of its temperature system.....thanks loads

I've encountered exactly same problem, and it turns out to be the problem of auxilary fans.... There are twoauxilary fans located at the very top of the car. Ifthe car'sspeed is high enough, the auxilary fans don't need to work because the natural wind flow from the front. If you are stuck in traffic jam and your auxilary fans don't work, there is no wind, andthe temp goes up.

Turn on your a/c and then inspect (w/ hood opened)your auxilary fans come on or not. If both are not running while the compressor is...then check the fuse or relay for your fans. The fans typical will not just stop working unless there is fuse or relay issues. I have never had this problem w/ a MB, but I have on another car. When you think about it, the concepts are the same.
