'97 E320-Air conditioner not cold enough..Help!

When I turn the A/C on on idle barely blows some cool air when take off and driving the air gets colder but not as much as it should.
I checked the level of freon (using those WalMart gauges) and shows pretty full.
What could be the problem? I would appreciate any help and advise!

Thanks!

Fitst step is to determine whether:

Low volume of air i.e. faulty blower or
air noy at the correct temperature i.e. Not cold enough.
Air not cold enough is most likely low refriherant i.e. LEAK or possibly the compressor is not cutting in.

I had the same problem. Have the freon evacuated and recharged. A mechanic should check for worn hoses at the same time. Something that you can do yourself is to check your cabin air filter to see how clogged it is. All of this could save you over $1000. Avoid the dealership....:D

My few pennyworth.

MB dealerships are EXPENSIVE. Agreed!

...but I do not understand why you guys in the States all have such terrible experience with MB technicians. After all these guys SHOULD have been trained in MB diagnosis and should therefore be better than any MB independent / garage around the corner. I have no alliegence to MB.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION is the key to successful diagnosis.

I have no problem with MB technicians. Just the fact that they won't share information with you (must be under instruction?) and the MB fincial gurus take you for everything they can. Like most otherdealers do. (Asset protection) It a culture thing.

Stuart, check this out. Two summers ago when my A/C was starting to give me some issues in XXXXXXXX, FL, I hit the internet hard. After days of thorough research I went to the dealer armed to the teeth with info on the codes and how to read them. I even created a spreadsheet showing what parameters that were out of spec. The service tech immediately called up the head of service to speak with me. He demanded to know where I got my info. I told him the internet. He didn't like that answer. Aftera while he warmed up to me when he realized that my high mileage Benz wasn't simply a flashy accessory. He and I started to volley info back and forth about the climate control system. Long story short, he denied knowing about the codes... very much. Anyway, I made an unrelated appt for a rotation and balance ($29.99 special... sweet) with the service manager. When I picked up my car after the appointment was finished the service manager pulled it to the far side of the lot and handed me my keys. I found that to be a bit odd, but soon found out why. The manager has printed out the MB pages on exactly what I was working on for the climate system! In scribbled handwriting he said that he could get fired for showing me this as MB does not want the customers being able to diagnose their own systems! Outrageous! I still have the documentation and use it every now and then. Thankfully my A/C woes are long behind me. It goes to show you that the dealers really are instructed to play their cards close to their hands at times. It's sad.

In case you ever need it or someone with similar problems needs to punch in some values.
