Default 96 E300D - rear axle hop/instability on rough road

It's got 118,00 miles, new front tires, recent front end alignment. Put on lift and checked underneath for worn, loose, bent items etc. Everything seems fine. Rear tires are worn, but not unevenly. Shocks seem ok. On rutted (paved) highway it wants to jump back and forth. OK the road takes some of the blame, but this is too extreme to just blame on the road. At 40-50 mph on rough road (just bumps) the rear end wanders all over the place. This is weird. All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Dave_M
