Default 94 e420 transmission problem after diff swap

1994 e420

So i fell into my desires and swapped out the 2.24 differential for a 2.82 from an s-class.

Took it for a spin and ....DAMN...much quicker....then...

This morning after driving for about 25 miles, the transmission starts shifting funny, the ABS light turns on and then the tranny does not shift from 2-3 or even 3-4 (even at really low throttle).

is it the differential? (the speedometer is off with the actual speed of the car, I have to find something to adjust..suggestions?...I am thinking this is why the ABS light is on)

It shifts fine when cold or if driving short distances.

The transmission was working fine before the swap.

I used 80w-90 gear oil.

Any suggestions and help are dearly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Quote:"I used 80w-90 gear oil." In the diff I hope!

Not familiar with your model but I guess the transmission is auto and electronically controlled like slightly later models.

If so the gearbox receives engine / road speeds as a key input to the gear shift point determination. Since you have changed the differential the basis on which change points are made are screwed up and checks within the software give "non plausible" results.
Things are possibly OK when cold since some of the checks MAY BE over ridden due to expected excess slip in the torque converter when cold.

The ABS uses road speed input also although I wasn't aware of a prop shaft speed as well. Sorry I can't be sure... Otherwise I can't think why the ABS is ON unless you also changed the rear tyre size. Maybe the ABS light is an entirely different unrelated issue.

Not sure why you changed the differential. this will likely significantly worsen your fuel consumption.

Think you are on your own on this one.

Stuart

lol...thats funny...

I think i figured out the problem...abs sensor was in wrong slot on the differential causing "limp home mode" after some driving

the guys on benzworld.org are much better at this forum thing....

and gas mileage will not be affected that much..besides...I have a c220...

Hi Just read your post, you might want to check out
tom.actionfit.com(search for "2.82 diffenential swap") or it may just come up, but he has a post on his swap and it may be of some help to you, if you haven't already solved your problem. Not sure if his applies to you but give it a look. Good luck
Rollie
