Default 230te starting problems

After a re engine ,i am having a slight problem .The engine starts fine but i have to maintain about 1500 to 2000 rpm ,for about 30 seconds otherwise it wont tick over for the first 30 seconds ,this is a big problem as its an auto ,so i cant pull away untill it will maintain a good tickover. I originally had another problem which was after leaving the car for 5 minutes after driving to shops or whatever ,it wouldn't start again until it had been sitting for a while .I realised i had 2 identical 4 pin plugs in wrong connectors ,the ones just in front of the metering unit. I think swapping these round has cured the starting failure problem ,but it has opened up another problem as described above .
Any help greatly appreciated Steve
