1998 E430 running problems......
 

I have the task of sorting out the company E class and need a few more opinions before I shell out money on parts so my boss doesnt kill me...........

The car will fire up fine and idle quite happily but when you try to apply some throttle it stutters + hesitates and wont go above 3K. When you remove the plug from the air mass sensor the car runs much better all the way through the rev range. I ve just taken it for a test drive and it was running better than any of the time I ve been with the company so im fairly sure that the air mass sensor it to blame..............

somebody tell me they ve had the same problems and solved it with a new sensor just to put my mind at rest!!

Before somebody says go get it plugged in an see what fault codes come up - this is a no go, the car is the company car that everyone uses and abuses so the boss is unwilling to spend anymore on the car than it really needs!!!

Does it have a check engine light on?
you can get it read for free at shucks,kraggens,autozone.
you can get a can of crc brand maf cleaner and clean the sensor per the diy on www.benzworld.org w210 diy section.
You can get another boss that is not so cheap

Getting the codes read will most probably save you money.

Your symptoms point to the MAF but will be confirmed by the codes being read. If you just change the MAF you MAY be wasting your money because it is a bad injector harness or similar.

Get the codes read as Ohlord says for FREE and come back with whatever codes you find.
