1998 E320 Wagon Shift Knob Stuck
 

Greetings All!

I'm considering buying a 1998 E320 wagon from a friend that has a problem that I've never encountered before: the gear shift knob is stuck/jammed in the 'R' position after having been towed by a careless tow-truck driver when it died on the road as a result of battery failure. The car won't start even with a new battery with the shift knob in this position, so I can't take it for a test drive. I've tried to move the shift knob back to 'P' or 'N' but it won't budge. Any suggestions on what could be causing this problem and how to deal with it without taking it to a mechanic?

The rod that moves up and down when you shift gears may be broken.
