1996 E300 Glow plugs madness
I have a 96 E300D. For some time I have been having a big problem with the glow plugs. I have to replace them every 3 weeks. I have replaced the relay because I thought the old one was bad. After I installed the new glow plugs everything is ok for about 3 weeks and then I lose one or two plugs. I have replaced them with orignal Bosch plugs. Does anyone have a clue on what could be causing this problem? I am running on Veggie oil but I start the engine on diesel and shut the engine down on diesel I don't think that it should be an issue. I have used this system for over 2 years without any problems.

Are the glow plugs being de-energized after running a bit?

Hi Fred,
After 2-3 weeks the plugs are just burned out but they look like new. When I install new ones everything is working great for another 2-3 weeks. I may find an answer for the problem. Someone told me that I should clean sockets which the plugs sit in. Extensive carbon build up probably created the problem. When the plugs touch the carbon build up they over heat and burn out. I clean out everything yesterday and installed new plugs, keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. I am wondering if that makes sense to you. Thanks, Adam |
