Default 1989 300 E Fuel level sensor

Hi, I purchased a 1989 MB 300E for my son and one of the problems I need to repair is that the fuel gauge doesn't work.I removed the large nut in the trunk and tried to remove the sensor and I could not get it out of the tank. I have read (here I think) It takes 5 minutes or it's easy. There is not enough clearance to tilt it backwards to get it started out of the hole in the tank. I heard it hitting the back of the tank. I turned it to both sides thinking that was the way to get it out and that was not it.The sensor is what the replacement looks like on line. Plastic fitting on top straight in to tank and float tube 90s into tank and that piece was the size of a paper towel tube.In length and width.Factory sensor seemed to have interference fit with in tank fuel lines also.My question is, Do I have smaller than normal tank in this car, It's about 4 or 5 inches to the back of the tank at the top where sensor goes in, If not what is the secret to re-install a new sensor? Is replacement unit thinner?I removed the guts of the old one-in 30 small pieces ( It was broken and had to come out anyway).I have been turning wrenches for over 25 years (but not a know it all) and I don't know how they even got it in with the tank together. I just would like my kid to have a fuel gauge, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
