Why don't you open it up and take a look?

you can use Toshiba CR2025 or equivalent. There are 2 of them in the remote.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings. When mine went dead, I just opened it up and took a look, then went and bought a couple.

What if you go buy CR2025 batteries before you open it up and they aren't the right ones? Better to check.

You could always pull the batteries out and check them with a multimeter. If you don't have one, stick them on your tongue and see if they still zap you

When I (with my wife -the boss) was picking up our ML, the dealer told us, that one of the buyers was curious about the batteries in the remote and tried to open his new remote to take a look inside.
That cost him almost $200 for replacing broken remote, so although I would agree with Lugnut comment for people, that are car enthusiast and have some practice with mechanical stuff, I would advise caution for those, that "think they are handy".
Watch batteries cost the retailer about 30 cents and you can buy those batteries for about 5 dollars at Long Drug, Rite Aid, Target and similar places.

He must have been a Polack. Polacks can take the remote to the dealer or to Radio Shack and ask them to change the batteries.
