Extended Warranties
Obviously, the Starmark solution is the best, but not always available, especially on older models bought through private sale. Aftermarket extended warranties come in many different versions each with increasingly more coverage, and cost. If you go this route, I strongly suggest getting a top-end plan to avoid exclusions on things likely to go bad and likely to be costly. As I posted elsewhere, I just had my entire instrument cluster replaced ($1000 job) under my third party warranty, so I feel it earned its keep. To do so, I had to originally buy a package that included the high-tech electronic components to ensure that the computers, NAV system, audio system, etc were also covered. Got a good price for what the coverage is - about $1500, good to 100K. The company I'm using is EasyCare (Platinum plan). Very little hassle and actually did cover stuff!
