Exclamation Cuts out in slow traffic and traffic lights

My 2006 CLK 320 Avante Guard cuts out whenever I'm in slow traffic (crawling) or stopped at traffic lights. I assumed it was something to do with a temperature cut off switch because 10 - 15 minutes later it would start again. Engine service light comes on and stays on untill next day. Mercedes mechanic can't seem to find the fault and I continue to throw money at it. No help from the manual either. Help! Any suggestions?

Its actually in the shop at the moment. Today he's looking at the F5 crankshaft sensor as suggested by another Mercedes forum member. Previously he believed (as did I) that it was an electrical problem and replaced various switches and coils. Another suggestion has been to clean the maf sensor ... whatever that is.
He has loooked at it with his diagnostic programmes but apparently this model Mercedes doesn't record this cutting out as an "event" and so it's memory has no record of it ever happening or give any clues.
