Mercedes Forum - Mercedes Benz Enthusiast Forums - A160 W168 Auto Gear Select Problems

I have a friend with an A160 - W168 (A168) that has locked in park mode and I have extracted the Auto Gear Select unit and wonder if it could be directly replaced by the A1693700509 unit from an A169, or a unit from an A170. I know where there is one that is basically new (only 4000 miles) and can be had for a good price. The A168 units are obviously old, not too reliable and getting very expensive. I don't really want to go down the breakers route if I don't have to, but equally my friend does not want to pay the price of buying a unit new (that could have been built in 2003) from Mercedes if he doesn't have to. The Mercedes official line is always that parts are not interchangeable, but as many of us know that is simply not true.
