I just joined this forum, with the hope of learning about the CL-55 and the CL-500. Can you guys fill me in about the differences and similarities between those two models?

The CL500 and CL55 are the top of the line limited-production coupes derived from the S-class.

The CL500 is you baseline CL-class you can get in the US. It comes with a 5.0 V-8 with 302hp/339lb-ft torque. around 16 mpg on paper city and 23 mpg highway on paper.

Now the CL-55 is the AMG tuned version of the CL500. It is a bit more sporty and handles a bit better. This one comes with a 5.4 V8 around 355 hp and 391lb-ft of torque. similar mpg on paper usually about minus 1 per gallon.

Besides the engine and some chassis components to give the CL55 AMG a more sporty feel they are alike in dimensions and similar in freatures. The CL55 seems to have been made for people who want a little more kick and sportiness in their CL. "And" isa key word since the CL600 gives the just about the same performance on paper but it lacks the sportiness. And thus, the CL55 AMG is born.

 

There are more differences. HP wise, it depends on the year. The 02 and earlier are the lower powered ones. 2003 has the 493HP kompressor which is significantly faster and also has tweaks to the chassis and transmission.

AMG also has different trim inside compared to the cl500 or 600. 0-60 and quarter mile times are hugely different between a 500 and a cl55. Kind of the difference between a sporty coupe and a muscle car in the later ones.
