Charcoal air filter

My 2000 L 500 has a charcoal air filter to filter the air coming into the passenger compartment. How often should it be replaced. Is it easy to replace? How can I do it? Is there a good after market part? Good online parts site?

check your air filters, if it needs to be replaced. Air filter is typically enclosed in a black plastic casing near the center-top of the engine. You'll find the air filter inside. It's usually bright yellow or orange or red, the better to see the collected dirt. If there are lots of dirt that had been accumulated then its time for a new one. Its just easy to replace, as to where to find one, there are lots of stores selling mercedes air filter, you'll have no difficulty in finding one.

I believe you need to have your Charcoal filter (2 pc. underneath the glove box - need to take out 2 screw for the knee cover)) & Dust Filter (2 pc. inside glove box-you need to take it out the entire gb 6 -4 screws) every 50,000 miles. and yes its a DIY job and could be than less than an hour. Check out ebay for discounted parts.

FYI, he is asking about the charcoal filter not the engine AF, and you normally replace this during B service.

I'm doing this myself. TY for this info. I'm confused now though, is the ACF and the dust filter one and the same, or 2 diff things?

BTW, when I replaced the air filter, I switched to K&N, and they DO improve the performance. I noticed the throttle response is more immediate, but only after driving the car for a half hour or so.
