Default Yellow gunk on oil cap

I opened the oil filler cap and surprise to see that there is a whole messy yellow gunk inside. Also some on the oil filler cap. It is not sticky but just grease I think. But I don't know how and where these grease coming from. The car was just got its B service done in December last year at the dealer. I don't think the dealer would put grease on the oil cap. This is just the opening to pour oil into the engine. Does this indicate a problem? By the way I have no idea why the dealer put in Quaker State 5W30 synthetic oil that time when I checked the receipt. I thought the oil should be 5W40 synthetic. Thanks. Cheers, Jacky

Check for oil in your coolant and coolant in your oil. Check for white smoke out the exhaust.

If none's there, everything should be okay. It's only condensation. Be sure to change the oil regularly (per recommended intervals).

If either check shows a mixture(oil & collant) or smoke, you may have a blown head gasket that's leaking.

A Benz dealer should not be using anything other than Mobil1.

0-30, 5-30, 5-20....does not really matter. What matter is it'd better be full syn oil because the official oil change interval is 10k.

Rumor has it that Quaker State is the cheapest **** out there, made by pennzoil i heard. also, it could be a blend, not full syn.

If one cannot afford Mobil1 for one reason or another, the cheapest **** that goes in your Benz should be Castrol GTX, nothing less.

if it happens to be dark black/brownish color with strong chemical smell, then it needs more attention.

I use Quaker State Full Synthetic. It ain't no blended oil. It is 229 rated. They do make a blended variety for your chevy. Don't confuse the two.

It gives me peace of mind to know that Quaker State-Pennzoil is now owned by Shell.

I am still a Mobil1 fan for syn oil. For dino oil, Castrol GTX.

Hey guys,
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Mobil One was the only full true synthetic oil. The others I was told, are just blends and offer more protection than the average Dino oilo, but are not true syntheitc. I use only Mobil 1 0W-40 as recommended by MB. Any clarification on this would be helpful.

Thanks. I took the car to the dealer and showed the gunk to the service manager. Indeed he said those are condensation. I asked if they cleaned it last time and I am surprise that it can build up so much in just 3 to 4 months. He said the engine is an aluminium high compression engine. When the car is mostly driven in short trips which is the case here, then the gunk can build up that much. He also checked the coolant reservoir and said it is fine. He said he would worry if there is stuff in the coolant reservoir. Gunk in the oil fill hole is normal.

Regarding the 5W30 Quaker State Synthetic, the dealer said it is Mercedes approved. They used 5W30 Quaker State Synthetic on every Mercedes, except AMG for which they use Mobil 1 0W40. Told me I need to specify Mobile 1 if I want to have Mobile 1 0W40, else they use this Quaker State 5W30.

I found that lists of mercedes approved engine oil are available on the web at
