Default What used C-Class is best?

Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a used C-class. In terms of reliability, is the 1999-2000 better than the 2001 on? From all that I have read, the 2001's & on had some issues... Any advise? Any thoughts/comments would be great!

Thanks!

i think the newer w202 models but some people might disagree. the quality and style of the w202s is better than the w203s. plus there are many problems with the craftmanship of the w203s e.i. the electronics.

I would go with a 99 or 2000. Those had the most amount of time to get the bugs worked out. If you can find a 99 built after July 99, I believe that is when the transmission had the upgraded bearing/sleeve (or whatever it is called) installed instead of the old bushing.

The sticker with the VIN in the door frame lists the build date, at least on US cars. You can also often see this date on the work orders from the dealer.

I found this older post very interesting and I'm in the same boat trying to determine what is better to buy.

I'm looking at C230's in the98, 99,00 years with mileage that range from 80's to 90's k on them for around $10k
vs. a C240 01, 02 for $13 to $16 with about the same mileage.

I talked to a dealer today recommending the 98-00 models over the 01-03's.

Thoughts?

I have a 2000 C280 SPORT (W202) and it is great and problem free. But also my cousin and my uncle have 2004 C Classes and they also have had no problems.

go with a w202 since the first w203 type mercedes had alot of issues with it. better yet find you a w202 c43 or if you can find one a c36 best of both worlds

I have had my 2002 C320 for 2+ years now. Purchased used w/38k miles. Luckily, I had the factory warranty for a while and used it to fix the typical BS electrical problems (wire harness, power seat module, battery...) and the extended warranty fixed the ignition system and window motor - nothing out of pocket other than my time and aggravation. The car has been a pleasure since.I have no experience w/the W202, but would recommendreading up on bothmodels. W203 =factory warranty or a top flight extended warranty + and get to know an independent garage that you can trust!
